The UN didn’t intervene in Rwanda, or in any other civil dispute, because they can’t. They were created solely to intervene in disputes between nations, and are strictly forbidden by their “constitution” to intervene in the civil affairs within sovereign states. They do not need to be disbanded, simply reorganized so that they are able to deal with internal conflicts without violating international law. However, since this can lead to problems with the independence of states vs. interfering in conflicts, it is a hard change to make in international law.

When difference qualifies for deficiency…left for power to decide what’s deficient and what’s pure (race, sex, culture, philosophy, religion…)…it is how the world becomes flat, and inhumanity the rule.

The guy has a good idea. I definitely believe in survival of the fittest. And pandas are clearly not the fittest. Keep them in the zoos so the species is still around and we can all ogle their cuteness, but don’t waste the money trying to save them.

I appreciate your perspective, Pierre.

I don’t think The Office is supposed to be in any way liberating – it’s merely a comedy. I couldn’t compare it to such a film as American Beauty. The Office is nowhere near the magnitude of Oscar winning films. It is simply and it brings happiness.

Maybe so but I do not see alternatives proposed here. At best a mere cynicism that is by now wholly artificial. There is no act of liberation, no emphasis on the human traits that must be brought out to transcend the cultural deadlock.

You could compare with, for instance, American Beauty which I believe is much more poignant and which, in addition to its sustained critique through characters caught in a deterministic culture, offers a window on the aesthetic, on the beautiful which is wholly different from Americanized beauty.
